Britain pays debt for Viet Nam

Ha Noi (VNA) - The Government of Viet Nam has agreed upon the British Government's initiative, under which Britain will pay on behalf of Viet Nam 10 percent of due debts the latter country is owing the International Development Association from 2005 to 2015.

Finance Minister Nguyen Sinh Hung handed over the agreement letter of the Vietnamese Government to British Ambassador Robert Gordon in Ha Noi on Tuesday.

According to the Ambassador, the British Government based this decision on Viet Nam's success in poverty reduction. Through the debt payment, Britain wants to help Viet Nam focus on sustainable development and continue reducing poverty in order to achieve the Millennium Targets set by the United Nations.

The British Government is calling upon other donors to participate in debt reduction and it will bring this issue to international forums, the diplomat said./.
